Snatch

The Snatch is the most demanding lift we perform with the barbell. It requires power, strength, speed, flexibility, coordination… just about all of the 10 physical skills painted on the back wall of the gym. One of the things I hear from people is that they don’t feel like they get a chance to “just practice” certain lifts like the snatch. Keep in mind that the snatch takes hours and hours of exposure and practice to refine, so every time you do a snatch, you are getting practice. And today is another fantastic day to work on technique! Do several lifts at a lighter weight until you are consistent with the lift. Then and only then, add some more weight. If you are plowing through this and your only motivation is to get to heavy regardless of technique, you are spinning your wheels. Your ability to lift weight is most likely going to be limited by your technique, not your strength, so focus on honing that technique! As Olympic Weightlifting Coach Mike Burgener says “Practice does not make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect.”
