With CrossFit we chase performance. What we’re after are cold hard numbers that show improvement in every aspect of fitness we can measure. We want to see 10 pound PR’s on your deadlift and 15 second PR’s on your mile all while getting those extra few rounds of “Cindy” before the timer runs out.
For nearly all of the new members we get this idea is absolutely foreign to them. They’ve been raised by the media and modern society to chase appearance. They find us because they want to lose those pesky 10 pounds they’ve been holding onto for a couple years, or to “tone up” (whatever that means).
Here’s the beauty in all of this though. By pursuing performance as we do in CrossFit, we’re also able to fulfill the needs of our folks looking for the aesthetic changes. The interesting thing to note about this is that if you were only to chase the “look” you wouldn’t be able to get any of the “feel” of fitness. Conversely, if you chase what it means to be fit, as you continue to climb to higher and higher levels of fitness that look gets more and more refined.
The bottom line here is that we want to help all of our athletes live the fullest life they can, and that’s only possible by being as fully capable as they can be. Full capability is only reached through good old fashioned hard work, but a byproduct of that hard work is that you tend to look like you’re fully capable as well.
